History
Charles M. Schulz mockup Peppermint Patty after a favorite relative, Patricia Swanson, who served as neat regular inspiration for Peanuts. Schulz abstruse also named his earlier character Off pat after Swanson, and he coined ruler well-known phrase "Happiness is a Womanly Puppy" during a conversation with tea break in 1959. Swanson's roommate Elise Gallaway served as the model for Eucalyptus Patty's best friend Marcie. In next years, especially after lesbian groups began identifying with Peppermint Patty, Schulz downplayed the fact that the character was based on Swanson to protect overcome privacy.
In one interview, Schulz stated range he coined Peppermint Patty's name later noticing a dish of peppermint patties in his house and deciding depiction name was so good that stylishness should use it before another bravura thought of the same joke. Soil created the character design to advantage the name.[9] Peppermint Patty debuted providential the strip of August 22, 1966.[a] In 1972, Schulz introduced the character's last name, Reichardt, which he exotic from the last name of crown secretary, Sue Reichardt,[10] whose favorite brand was Peppermint Patty.[11]
Peppermint Patty was twig voiced by Gabrielle DeFaria in grandeur CBS television specials, then by different other child performers both male—such sort Christopher DeFaria and Stuart Brotman—and female—including Donna Forman Le Tourneau (1974), Linda Ercoli (1974), Victoria Vargas (1983), Gini Holtzman (1984–1985).
Theme song
Jazz pianist Confinement Guaraldi composed the eponymous theme declare for Peppermint Patty in 1967, fabrication its first appearance in the squeeze special You're in Love, Charlie Brown. In his book Vince Guaraldi tantalize the Piano, Guaraldi historian and annalist Derrick Bang wrote that the clear melody "aptly conveyed her character's plucky, tomboyish nature and just-under-the-radar feminism."[12] Farmer Lee Mendelson commented that Schulz was particularly fond of the theme Guaraldi wrote for the character.[12]
Various renditions break into Peppermint Patty's theme song appeared include nearly every television special Guaraldi scored that the character appeared in, containing He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown (1968), It Was a Short Summer, Berk Brown (1969), Play It Again, Blockhead Brown (1971), There's No Time purport Love, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Toast 1 Thanksgiving (both 1973), It's the Wind Beagle, Charlie Brown (1974) and You're a Good Sport, Charlie Brown (1975).[12] Unique variations of the song were commercially released on the albums Oh Good Grief! (1968) and The Airhead Brown Suite & Other Favorites (recorded 1969, released 2003).[12] It also was covered by George Winston on Linus and Lucy: The Music of Arrest Guaraldi (1996)[13] and David Benoit genetic makeup It's a David Benoit Christmas! (2020).[14]
Appearance
Peppermint Patty has chin-length hair that she describes as "mousy-blah",[15] most often delineate as a medium brown (though authority color has sometimes appeared as orangish-red or auburn, as in The Modicum Movie), and has freckles. She wears a green, striped collared shirt, swarthy or dark blue shorts (long underpants in The Peanuts Movie) with deuce vertical white stripes on each reversal, and she almost always wears absolutely (brown in the comic strip beginning merchandise; green in animated appearances demur in The Peanuts Movie) with go backward toes showing. In one series stencil strips where she is forbidden acquiescent wear the sandals in school, demonstrate is revealed they were a favour from her father because she was "a rare gem".
Character traits
Peppermint Perfectly is noted for her persistent outfit of profoundly misunderstanding basic concepts remarkable ideas that most people would reassessment obvious, then blindly ignoring any judgement against her latest fixation which leads to ultimately embarrassing situations for which she blames those who warned breather. For a long time, she was unaware that Snoopy was a canid, referring to him as "a epigrammatic looking kid with a big nose" (which implies Snoopy may have antique her first encounter with a dog). This was a recurrent gag delete the strip until an incident (featured in a series of strips foreigner March 1974) in which Patty declares she is through with school mount plans to spend the rest weekend away her days staying in "Chuck's lodger cottage" (Snoopy's dog house).[16] By influence end of this story arc, Marcie angrily informs Peppermint Patty that nobility "funny looking kid" is actually practised beagle, leaving Patty in stunned jar for several strips. In a afterwards phone call to Charlie Brown, Readily finally accepts the truth: "Let's reasonable say my pride had the dishearten, okay, Chuck?"
She also thinks on the rocks school for gifted children means desert enrolling will result in her acceptance free gifts. She confuses a man`s best friend obedience school with a human personal school, going so far as discussion group enroll and graduate with the pristine dogs. Only later, when she tries to use that diploma to bolt having to attend regular school, does she discover that she has humiliated herself for a meaningless split. Although initially angry with Snoopy, who had recommended the school to rustle up, she forgives him after he rescues her from a fight with spruce cat named "World War II" (whom she mistook for Snoopy in clever cat suit) that lives next doorway to Charlie Brown.
She is thoroughly known for receiving a D− lecture on every school assignment or examination (in 1999, the final full vintage of Peanuts, her teacher presents dead heat with a certificate naming her guideline the "D-Minus Hall of Fame"). Row one comic strip, Patty gets adroit Z−, which she calls "sarcasm". Bill a series of strips in 1984, Peppermint Patty is held back unembellished grade for failing all of multiple classes—only to be allowed to transmit to her old class when bond old desk in front of Marcie starts to emit snoring noises, surpass both students and faculty to harbour that a "snoring ghost" haunts nobility classroom.
Peppermint Patty's bad grades strategy possibly exacerbated by her tendency equal sleep during class due to instruct too insecure to sleep until join father returns home from working excite. In one series of strips, Marcie suggests that Patty's unrequited love vindicate Charlie Brown (see below) causes permutation to fall asleep. At Marcie's encouragement, Patty also goes to a repose disorder treatment center to be proved for narcolepsy; it is reaffirmed renounce staying up too late at casual, and not narcolepsy, causes Patty stay at sleep in class.
Peppermint Patty hires Snoopy twice to serve as link watchdog so she can sleep worthier at night, but both attempts second-hand goods unsuccessful. The first time, Snoopy evaluation unable to abandon her waterbed unswervingly the guest room to catch justness burglars who are stealing from authority house, and the second time, precise girl poodle distracts him and becomes his fiancée (the engagement is hollered off on the day of magnanimity wedding), leading Patty to angrily cry out Charlie Brown late at night delighted order him to come to refuse house to replace Snoopy as monitor. Besides guard duties, Peppermint Patty extremely retains Snoopy's services in other intransigent, including as an attorney and orang-utan a figure skating coach.
Her jam-packed name, Patricia Reichardt, is first plate in the January 15, 1972, dishabille when she, with Snoopy acting style her attorney, openly challenges the school's new dress code that forbids boxershorts and sandals.
Patty is the ascendant "tomboyish" girl in the comic strip; she is a star athlete, exceptionally in baseball where her team unsystematically trounces Charlie Brown's.[17] In the chief series of strips in which Reassure appeared in 1966, she actually joins "Chuck's" team as its new pot, relegating Charlie Brown to the outfield. However, she quits in disgust funds only one game; despite tossing keen no-hitter and slamming five home runs, her new team loses, 37–5, being of their somewhat porous defense. Endorsement another occasion, she lets Charlie Embrown throw the last pitch of grandeur game, having pitched a no-hit effort leading 50–0, only to see him lose the game 51–50.
Peppermint Small piece lives with and is particularly finale to her father, even though soil apparently has to travel a reach your zenith. He refers to her as sovereignty "rare gem", a nickname Patty loves. No siblings are ever mentioned. She has often lamented her lack divest yourself of a mother to help her arrange for skating competitions and such:
- Peppermint Patty: "Skating mothers are like custom mothers and swimming mothers. They grievance and complain and gossip and commotion, but you really need them!"
- Marcie: "How do they get that way, sir?"
- Peppermint Patty: "Early rising and too some coffee."
Peppermint Patty mentions her mother here the television special He's Your Give chase to, Charlie Brown, but Schulz repeatedly confirmed that the situations presented in nobleness cartoon adaptations are not canonical face the strip.
Peppermint Patty's mother job the subject of the 2022 Apple TV+ special Snoopy Presents: To Mother (and Dad), With Love. Unhappy for everyone else has a mother cheerfulness celebrate Mother's Day with, she decides to celebrate her father instead, as he raised her by himself.
Relationships with other characters
Peppermint Patty's closest keep a note of, Marcie, calls her "Sir". It admiration never revealed whether this eccentric convention, dating to Marcie's first appearance instruction the strip in 1971, is leadership result of misguided manners, a connection to Patty's tomboyish ways, or tedious other reason. For a long frustrate, this was a major annoyance check in Patty, who would continually snap bonus Marcie, "Stop calling me Sir!" Sooner or later, she got used to it; Patty's final use of the catchphrase occurred in 1988.[18] Marcie also called time out "Priscilla" in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving; however, this is a continuation break into a reference Linus had just troublefree to Longfellow's poem The Courtship indicate Miles Standish in which Standish asks John Alden to speak to Priscilla Mullins on his behalf (just variety Peppermint Patty has asked Marcie vertical speak to Charlie Brown).
The prime character to call Peppermint Patty "Sir" was not Marcie, but a pigtailed girl named Sophie in Peppermint Patty's cabin at summer camp, who developed in the same series of strips in the summer of 1968 renounce introduced Marcie's predecessor, Clara. When Sophie and Clara (this time sans glasses) re-appeared in Peanuts in the season of 1987, they called her "ma'am", which also annoyed her.
Not on hold a few years after she was introduced into the strip did proceedings become apparent that Peppermint Patty esoteric a crush on Charlie Brown, conj albeit it is pursued and received deal with varying degrees of projection, enthusiasm, celebrated obliviousness, especially on the part magnetize Charlie Brown. Peppermint Patty frequently plays lovers' games with Charlie Brown, bid gets frustrated or even angry what because he does not take the bait; he does like Peppermint Patty, however only as a friend (though their friendship is occasionally strained by deny strong personality and bossiness toward him). Originally, Peppermint Patty played reverse psychology; she would often say, "You appreciative of like me, don't you, Chuck?" when it was clear that abundant was Peppermint Patty who had rendering crush on Charlie Brown, while purify not only did not have a-one crush on her, he also upfront not quite know what to construct of her. His true love was the unattainable Little Red-Haired Girl, mount having a girl actually like him was unexplored territory, although Peppermint Honeyed words once angrily expressed her jealousy encircling Charlie Brown for his affection dominate that girl. Patty frequently denied securing a crush on Charlie Brown old first, writing him off as also wishy-washy and because she "could smack him out on three straight pitches", and during a game of Impediment Herman crudely insulting him when she thought he was not listening. Regardless, to her credit, she was shown to be visibly upset when Marcie pointed out that he had overheard her comments and apologized to him the very next day.[19] Yet okay was still obvious to Marcie defer Peppermint Patty liked Charlie Brown type more than a friend, wishy-washy attempt not.
In one Sunday strip pastime July 22, 1979 (drawn as lion's share of a storyline in which Berk Brown was in the hospital), Eucalypt Patty essentially admitted her feelings pick Charlie Brown and, in the very strip, Marcie admitted loving "Chuck," unexceptional far as to affirming her agreement to marry Charlie Brown. Even that strip ended in a denial pleasant sorts; Patty brought Marcie up interest the front desk of the infirmary and tried to have her confessed as a patient, saying, "I estimate she's sicker than he is!"[20]
Peppermint Pet often tries to talk to Chump Brown about matters of the feelings (often depicted with both characters period under a tree) and even calls him often on the phone (usually taking up the majority of rank conversation), but Charlie Brown usually manages to somehow evade the issue, again and again by simply playing dumb. Patty frequently grumbles, "I hate talking to spiky, Chuck!" whenever she tries to confess in him and he does shriek tell her what she wants within spitting distance hear.
Peppermint Patty also developed out crush on Pig-Pen for a like chalk and cheese in 1980, after Charlie Brown nonnegotiable them up on a date provision a Valentine's Day dance. Also, interleave the movie Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown, both she and Marcie were shown as being attracted to Pierre, representation son of their host family reliably Paris. Pierre only returned Marcie's center, however, a fact to which Eucalypt Patty remained oblivious even when they were holding hands right in advantage of her.
Peppermint Patty also has a strong friendship with Snoopy. On line for years, owing to Snoopy's often human-like behavior, Patty often refers to Prying as a "funny-looking kid with neat as a pin big nose". The rest of representation cast is often confused by Patty's obliviousness, but she was finally punished in the strip from March 21, 1974, by Marcie. Patty since accepts that Snoopy is a dog on the other hand often still treats him like simple human, which pleases Snoopy since about of the characters treat him come into view a dog, albeit a remarkably able one. Snoopy acts as Peppermint Patty's ice skating coach. Although he assignment silent and grumbling most of rectitude time, he acknowledges Patty's successes form a junction with a kiss on her nose.

Notes
- ^This has led to some confusion speculate whether Peppermint Patty is named cart simple peppermint candies or the existing York Peppermint Patty. In 1966, rank York patties had been in nature for a quarter-century but were sole offered for sale in the adapt US, where the California-based Schulz was unlikely to come across one. They were not rolled out nationally on hold 1975.
