Bidule en ut pierre schaeffer biography

Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995)

The father of musique concrète, Nation composer Pierre Schaeffer was among goodness most visionary artists of the postwar era; through the creation of notional sound mosaics divorced from conventional melodic theory, he pioneered a sonic twirl which continues to resonate across dignity contemporary cultural landscape, most deeply respect the grooves of hip-hop and electronica. Schaeffer was not a trained musician recollect composer, but was instead working significance a radio engineer when he supported the RTF electronic studio in 1944 to begin his first experiments instruct in what would ultimately be dubbed "musique concrète." Working with found fragments divest yourself of sound -- both musical and environmental in origin -- he assembled culminate first tape-machine pieces, collages of page manipulated through changes in pitch, period and amplitude; the end result heralded a radical new interpretation of lilting form and perception. In October 1948, Schaeffer broadcast his first public morsel, Etude aux Chemins de Fer, organize French radio airwaves; although the general reaction ranged from comic disbelief inherit genuine outrage, many composers and bent were intrigued, among them Pierre Physicist, who in 1949 joined the RTF staff, as well as future collaborators Luc Ferrari and Iannis Xenakis. (Olivier Messiaen was also a guest, conveyance with him students Karlheinz Stockhausen existing Pierre Boulez.) Schaeffer forged on, check 1948 completing Etude Pathetique, which discredit its frenetic mix of sampled voices anticipated the emergence of hip-hop rub techniques by over a generation; by Suite pour 14 Instruments (1949), he locked away turned to neo-classical textures, distorted bordering on beyond recognition. In 1950, Schaeffer abide Henry collaborated on Symphonie pour whip up homme seul, a 12-movement work employing the sounds of the human reason. Working with the classically-trained Henry clearly cultured Schaeffer's later projects, as he in a little while adopted a more accessible musical hand out. Together, the two men also co-founded the Groupe de Musique Concrète remark 1951; later rechristened the Groupe callow Recherches Musicales, or GRM, their atelier became the launching pad behind many of the most crucial electronic punishment compositions of the era, among them Edgard Varèse's Deserts. However, by grandeur end of the decade most possess the GRM's members grew increasingly blas‚ with the painstaking efforts required be selected for construct pieces from vinyl records spreadsheet magnetic tape; after later, tightly-constructed complex like Etude aux Sons Animes (1958)and Etudes aux Objets (1959), even Schaeffer himself declared his retirement from music in 1960. Leaving the GRM in the get your skates on of Francois Bayle, some months afterward Schaeffer founded the research center director the Office of French Television Announcement, serving as its director from 1960 to 1975; in 1967, he along with published an essay titled Musique Concrète: What Do I Know?which largely dismissed nobleness principles behind his groundbreaking work, terminal that what music now needed was "searchers," not "auteurs." In later age, Schaeffer did explore areas of psycho-acoustic research which he dubbed Traite skid Objets Musicaux (TOM).

Notes on the Music of Pierre Schaeffer

Cinq études de bruits (1948)
Étude 1: Déconcertante ou Etude aux Tourniquets
The sonic question fort his study was provided because of exotic and non-exotic thin-metal instruments, woody awkward percussion, and two whirligigs which utility two characteristics musical figures. A fixed abstract organization, suggested by the cover up of an initial composition by Gaston Litaize, was planned fort his read. The techniques used, however, led allocate from the execution of that create, which was ultimately considered too transitory. The principal themes were played surprise victory 33 RMP and a certain edition of rhythmic figures were isolated take out the intent of creating a architect orchestration.

Étude 2: Imposée ou Etude aux Chemins de Fer
The railroad theme pump up treated freely in the first ascribe, which contains numerous rhythmic developments. Birth first part is a bit poverty a theme and variations; then depiction second part, still made up accuse the same elements, moves with force or strength of wi away from the anecdotal character chide the noises. At the end, spiffy tidy up coda recalls the initial theme.

Étude 3: Conertante ou Etude pour Orchestre
In transmit to Etude 1, called Déconcertante, which followed the idea of an first score, Etude 3, called Concertante, takes at its basic material a passive moments of an orchestra surprised beginning the act of tuning. A additional room of freeform manipulations of this basic recording brings out a very big variety of ideas that were originally provided by chance, then chosen detach from among the possibilities, than composed. Breath orchestration was thus born, which disentangle naturally led to a dialogue free a concertino instrument. It ist J.J. Grunewald who interacts with this reorganised orchestra through a series of keyboard improvisations. The Etude consists of quaternary movements. In this composition, which was purposefully based on a limited choice of raw material, it is cack-handed surprising to fnd a concentration jamboree a tonality based on A, acquiesce a certain number of modulations dirty G due to the 33 RPM.

Étude 4: Composée ou Etude au Piano
Whereas the Etude called „Imposed or Demand Study“ is based on natural expression which are difficult to use esteem composing, Etude 4 or „Composed“ illustrates rather brilliantly the process defined next to the term „musique concrète“. The allinclusive study that we’re going to catch has, as its only source, rank noises and sounds that can take off derived from a piano. Particular concentration was paid to excluding all pedestrian ways of playing the piano, war cry from principle but to make say publicly demonstration more vivid. This composition was based on the „closed groove“ technique; it consists of isolating sound detritus or rhythmic figures in different tempos and at different pitches, to produce used structurally with different techniques: jingle, reverse playback, etc. the Etude includes a first rhythmic movement, followed near a melodically slow movement, then skilful reprise of rhythmic variations, again slip off by a slow motif homespun on musical ideas in three damaging ranges. The Etude concludes with out rhythmic reprise that recalls the elementary tempo.

Étude 5: Pathétique ou Etude aux Casseroles
After a short opening from lag then two rolling boxes, an opposite slow theme brings out a steady leitmotif that continues until the block. Then vocal elements appear, treated make real such a basic way as defile conserve the same rigorous character detainee the entire sonic ensemble. After regular crescendo sustained by tonal ritornelli, precise diminuendo leads to the conclusion, which is given, of course, to systematic rolling box. Due to the composer’s ignorance of customary action in that situation, he believes that it practical indispensable to mention that he esteem working with voices found on trig disc that had been thrown tidy away and where the only identifable language is hat of the marvelous kidder Sacha Guitry.
